High Stakes Poker on Capitol Hill
“Big money eats up little money”
As all good poker players know
So if you want to win when the stakes are real high
You’d better bring a whole lot of dough.
The game of the century was set to begin
The big prize was the nation’s debt ceiling
To raise it or not? was the question
And the country had many mixed feelings.
McConnell made the opening bid
He wanted to see spending cuts
“$200 billion is my opening bet
And I say it without any ‘buts.’ ”
“I’ll call you on one condition”
Said the President with his hand held close to his vest
“That you never touch Social Security
Or Medicare, or when the economy is stressed.
“Hell no” cried John Boehner with anger
“Now I’m raising this pot to the sky
I want one trillion dollars in cuts
Just ask me and I might tell you why.”
Obama eyeballed his two rivals
They had raised him to unheard of heights
The economy hung in the balance
Default might be our last rites.
“Gentlemen,” he said, “I’ll meet your demands
But you must put it all down in in writing
That you never again use the debt ceiling
To do any more of your fighting.”
The two men looked at each other
Then broke into hysterical laughter
A trillion dollar gift for such a concession?
We’ll be remembered for ever after.
They quickly agreed with a hand shake
Then Obama looked straight in their eyes
He said “Gentlemen, this debt is paid”
Then handed them quite a surprise.
It was a coin worth one trillion dollars
Freshly minted with his very own bust
And etched with “for U.S. debts only”
And boldly “In God is our Trust.”
Oh somewhere in this favored land
The sun is shining bright
The band is playing somewhere
And somewhere hearts are bright.
And somewhere men are laughing
And somewhere good things are eaten
But there is no joy in one-half of Congress
The lightweights have all been beaten.
