Lessons

As we age
There is no let up
We still must confront
Challenges and obstacles
That test our resolve;
But now we know right
From wrong with greater
Clarity
And still we act with greed
With self indulgence
Against the nudges of
Our better angels;
We know unfit when we
See it hear it feel it;
We know ungrateful by
The taking and
The lies;
We know unjust by
The cruel outcomes twisted
Into virtues;
If life is a testing ground
The losers are still winning
And the winning grinds
More slowly;
But onward we trudge
With little more to
Guide us than
The promise of
Better days ahead;
Against the headwinds
Of the sound and the fury
And the tales told by idiots
Signifying
Nothing.
