Dying In High Definition

I saw a man
Dying
He was crying
Pleading
Afraid
Of impending unknown
But it was in high definition
On screen
So it was not real
Right?
I saw a man
Pleading for help
To free him from incessant pain
I saw his brother end his life
Injecting death in his veins
I thought I understood
Death from HIV
But it was in high definition
On screen
And not real
Right?

Reg, sometimes it takes the view into reality to awaken the sleeping spirit and mind, it is so with your work. You write reality and show us the views into what we at times take for granted. A poetic display of emotion and reality that tends to shake and awake the very senses that become dormant with the consistent bombardment of life viewed through the screen.....

Reg,
I believe the population of the world is becoming much to numb to the bad things happening in it and mainly because of the constant barrage of horrible things that are put in front of us in graphic detail all day and night over the TV. I can understand your motivation for this poem. Even more, I can understand how one can become numb to all the pain and death and craziness. Thank you for this poem.

SO good. I agree wholeheartedly with what Tom Hyland and the others have said. Some years ago, R. and I stopped watching TV. Left our set off three+ years. The shock of walking in a room and seeing someone pointing a gun in my direction almost knocked me down. As for seeing people blown up or shot or lying dead. . .so easy to let yourself numb. Become a nerveless robot! Thank you for this much-needed reminder that what we are seeing are real people really hurting. . .and worse. Bless you, my friend, for being the compassionate and highly sensitive soul that you are. Not to mention talented. Love you! 'Pea' <3

Regis you've so finely carved the truth ,the reality of life, which is death.it undoubtedly make us aware of the horrors of the pathetic disease, but i think this piece of poetry has its scope beyond that.
i think the disease Aids is a symbol of suffering ,of agony, of pain and pathos.so it reflects the fact that happy moments are only interludes the main darma is full of humiliation and pain that is sorrows usually in high density in our lives than joy.

One thousand and one... 1002... one thousand and three... 1004... this is how you count as you are doing compressions on someone's chest. THIS IS REAL! THIS IS HIGH DENSITY! THIS IS HIGH INTENSITY!

As soon as you moved the heavy bed out of the way and rolled him over on his back, and saw his pale waxen skin you knew he was in no pain! You instinctly knew he was DEAD already! There was no pulse, but you tore a piece off of a plastic trash bag, punched a hole in it and used it to cover his mouth and quickly starting blowing air in. WHY?

Because his wife is moaning and chanting incessantly, as she tries to repeat the instructions being given to her on the phone by someone at 9-1-1. Compressions - Breath - check for pulse... over and over and over... It seems like an eternity, but the EMT is running into the bedroom in less than 15 minutes. SIX people rush in and take over, very quickly and professionally. One administers oxygen...another starts an injection...another takes over your compressions... another is hooking up a monitor...

Your heart is pounding like mad...the adrenalin is really flowing...it's a strange high. Then somehow you find yourself out in the living room, consoling the woman...then the adult crying son arrives...you try to calm them both... THIS IS REAL!

This is NOT T.V. - nor a film - nor Hollywood - you were lounging in your pajamas on a Saturday morning, when she came frantically pounding on your door. There was no time to think, or choose, you just ACTED spontaneously. In two weeks it will be exactly a year since Tony died. Just weeks ago, she also lost her Mother. Thank God I wasn't involved in that ordeal!

Whether a death is on live TV, or a documentary, or a Hollywood dramatization -- it should be regarded as REAL! Children need to be taught that DEATH, the ending of a LIFE, is serious business. It is not a cartoon, nor a game, nor a choice -- it is FINITE and FINAL!

REG --- thanks for reminding us that CARING is what is so important! Tom.

Both real-world death and film-world death have become so profuse in our time that we do indeed, I think, run the risk of becoming numb to the actuality of it as well as of losing the ability to distinguish between the two. Surely such a disconnect would explain at least part of the reason so many of our chilren outside of official war zones end up with guns in their hands taking the lives of classmates and family members.

I spent over five years working at close proximity with men and women with acute addictions. Part of the tragedy was that most pleaded for help yet were unable - even unwilling - to help themselves. The suffering was real all right, but perpetually self - inflicted. Bottom line that I quickly learned: unless a guy initiated turning away from self - destruction, there was not much anybody else could do short of sectioning that person. With the present non - judgemental ethos governing much of the social services, there is little chance of that evasive life saving action being considered.

That is part of the distorted reality out there.
