Doubt

Doubt
That frosty finger of suspicion
Sneaks like a snake
Among the lush and lovely leaves of love
It slithers in the soul
Like a serpent slinks in the grass
Hiding
Waiting

Doubt creeps in
Where it is shadowy and dim
It bites the spirit
It leaves a nagging, throbbing ache
Like a summer sans sunlight

Doubt is like the dark side of a date
With a splendid but deadly addiction
It is subtle and insidious
It grows concealed like a tumour
Like a virus
Infecting and sinister

Doubt is like a dark cloud
Ominous and foreboding
Foreshadowing the storm
It destroys relationships
Leaving the soul empty
Chilled with the illness
Of mistrust

I do doubt today that my former lover who moved to SC just doesn't think of me at all anymore...never hear a word from him.....

Regis,

Doubt is a pain, no question. But without it, how could any philosopher--or poet-- work? No good taking anything on face value or else we all get led by our noses to futures we've never subscribed to.

Learning never ends and that's OK!

Best to you,

Paddy

Many have suffered this who have been hurt deeply...
Then the time must come, do you allow doubt to creep in?
Do you allow it to take over your life?
Do you allow it to make all your decisions?
Or do you tell yourself... if I doubt is there a true reason and proof for it?
Do you miss perhaps the one opportunity in your life because of your own self doubt? Just sayin'

Love Regis thank you

And as your poem so adroitly pronounces, such doubt is increasingly inevitable, given the hidden agendas that make up far too much of the motivations for a relationship now days. As I offered in "Duplicity Banished," the purity of love runs the gauntlet each time it is entertained. Well written and impactful reminder of how murky the waters have been made.

Now I have to go write a poem of my own without a doubt.

A superb poem..Yet sadly doubt is one thing that unites us all, being human ... It is the extent to which we let it dominate our lives and loves that is important..A little healthy scepticism is possibly wise at times...
Best wishes, Diana...

I love the last paragraph, how Doubt is a dark cloud, ominous and foreboding, foreshadowing the storm, but you can't let that storm consume you, destroy your relationships. You have to fight that current and stand strong, and listen to your heart because you have a beautiful and poetic heart. :)

Don't be like doubting Thomas when you can pray .... or write poetry!

Though, doubt is just another facet of our humanity that we have to live with and learn from.

Great poem Regis. Good analogies/metaphors/similies used throughout the poem. Flowed very well. I found the poem deep with much to think about. I think when it comes to love everyone has their doubts, even if they are tiny. Doubts can tear people apart, can make the love die or diminish, can affect the relationships between people... Thanks for sharing this piece. Wonderfully done!

Such a powerful poem, Regis. Doubt sounds like a rational, even-handed, easy-going kind of concept until you delineate its insidious effects on a relationship. It is indeed like a nagging thorn or a brooding cancer where it is left to erode our perceptions of the truth. Excellent progression of thoughts through this work. xx

Herpetology amour.
Doubt is a self fulfilling beast that feeds on itself.
But it is real. I once, long, long ago married her.
But I Saw the light.

The beauty of it?
I guess it's obvious

I have always felt that if I was being accused of something I might as well go ahead and do it because I was already being punished for it anyway. Doubt ruins everything and it is really important to keep communication lines open so that there will not be any doubt. Many relationships that could have stood the test of time are ruined, early on, by doubt and/or accusation. Topic well addressed, Reg.
Take care,
Sherry
