A story pivoting around four keys: one of silver, one of gold, one so fragile, and one to fold—the author has mastered the genre of Young Adult Fantasy. J.S. Frankel achieves this mastery by unlocking read-worthy realms transcending genre:

For my money, it’s his characters. Down-on-their-luck, nowhere-to-turn protagonists, Bill Newell and Carla Meadows, are both seventeen and dying of cancer. Plenty of other things suck too. So, given the thread of hope to extend their lives, they’ve got nothing to lose by making a deal with an unsavory demon named Malgorath to retrieve four keys.

While I’m on that subject, there’s a host of otherworldly characters who are mighty peculiar. Dill, for starters.

Beyond the author’s flare for writing a page-turning adventure infused with witty dialogue and sarcastic jabs, the main characters’ noble sense of decency and justice prevail. In my opinion, an essential key.

Following in the footsteps of Bill and Carla along each pursuit, more dangerous than the first, a great story unfolds where there’s no turning back for the reader. Highly recommended!
