Top-Notch Mystery

Author Judith White’s ‘Drowning in Deception: The Case Files of Sam Flanagan’ (Book4) is an exhilarating read. Set in mid-September of 1943 in Michigan, the author’s vivid details bring out the nuances of the time: Detroit’s valiant contribution to the war effort-- building bombers and armored tanks to ship overseas; a smattering of noteworthy places such as the Detroit Club and J.L. Hudson Department Store; the attire; turns of phrase; the price of a cup of coffee.

The integration of these nuances motors the story along like Sam's ’38 burgundy Chevy as he becomes embroiled in solving the baffling murder mystery of Sondra (Sonny) Girard. Just as baffling to the reader, the author drops a few subtle clues for the astute reader to speculate what is going on and suspect who murdered Sonny.

The characters, some of whom have matters to hide, are fully developed. Bernie Daly can test the patience of a saint. The engaging dialogue is laced with sarcasm and wit.

I highly recommend this top-notch mystery which glues the reader to every page.
