Romantic Comedy; Women Sleuths; Mystery/Romance: G-Ma in Rare Form!
My 5-Star review published at Amazon for ‘Mildred Romancing the Odds’ (Mildred Unchained Book2) by Toni Kief:
Having read and enjoyed ‘Mildred in Disguise’ (Book 1), I had to catch up with Mildred Petrie in Book 2. Whenever G-Ma walks the beat around Ivory Winds Casino in her capacity as plainclothes security officer in one disguise or another, she has a tendency to become embroiled in thwarting crime by diving into the fray.
There’s plenty of high-stakes adventure involving a prostitute ring, systematic cheating at slots, and the circulation of counterfeit chips in the gaming area.
Of special interest to me, a cold-case investigation begins to shed light on her husband’s death, previously ruled a suicide.
I liked how the author wove the thread of romance through this book with realism and humor. There was a moment where I feared the worst would happen.
And, there’s your average, everyday Mildred during off hours from the casino:
She lavishes affection on Popcorn, her cat. She lovingly involves herself with family. She graciously hosts the casino’s weekly business meetings at her condo every Tuesday, serving everyone’s favorites—apple and cherry turnovers.
What were the odds for Mildred finding romance at the advanced age of 72?
When the author envisioned Mildred Petrie, she created a character who defies the odds of behaving like the stereotypical “little old lady,” thereby offering the reader a winsome story.
