Author Toni Kief’s composite of historical biographies truly celebrates a cadre of women whose impressive accomplishments have either been overlooked, diminished, or vilified. The author’s extensive research cites “gender role attitude” as the primary culprit for keeping these innovators in the background. As a result of rampant discrimination, women have had to become even more resourceful, to the point of disguising themselves as men to further their education—or join a crew of pirates.
This groundbreaking book exposes the reader to high achieving women in all walks of life throughout history: artists, musicians, writers, educators, emperors, explorers, scientists, warriors, villains, etc.
The author’s witty interjections peppered throughout the book add timeless perspective.
I highly recommend this multi-faceted, celebratory book which I found to be fascinating and empowering.
