Whether or not the lot of Scurvy Bastards create purpose or meaning in their lives, their take on life, while in a drunken stupor, may just be on point. Hose, Wizard, the Nut, and Sir William the Wired—to cite a few of these bastards—certainly find their Holy Grail in the muse of booze. Even their dysfunctional vehicles have thespian monikers: Sammy-Davis-Junior Mobile and Norman Green Bomb.

Thoroughly enjoying the antics of several motley crewmen, I have a particular soft spot for Loki, the taxi driver, in “Transcendental Treks on the Noir Shift”. Whether stoned or hung over on his shift, he manages to find and deliver his fare.

It’s nice to know that Jackie (“Jackie”) rediscovered a bygone epiphany—without mentioning where or how.

An impeccably written short story collection, the author may have slipped in an autobiographical mickey via “Scribo Ergo Sum” when he alludes to “humorously, prosaically, and poetically disguising a lack of acumen behind a volcano of words erupting in a plethora of styles”.

Despite what the characters might lead one to believe, there’s no disguising the author’s literary acumen. See for yourself.
