Mary R. Woldering’s well-written, in-depth, short story aligns the reader with Ana Lena Thomas. Ana, an African-American child protagonist, struggles to come to terms with crossing the fine line between dreams and her connection to a heavenly realm triggered by her art drawings.

The author weaves an intricate tale, threading the setting of Tennessee in the 1960s, along with its societal prejudices and cultural vernacular back in the day. She cleverly invokes the lyrics to Chuck Berry’s “Memphis” as a means to an end for Ana’s dream of flying.

I highly recommend this reader-fulfilling fantasy for its sensitive and imaginative rendering of past connections and life beyond the veil.
