Author P.S. Winn’s snapshot of heart-wrenching realism takes place in the close-knit community of Mission Valley. Seemingly, one after another, residents are becoming seriously ill—many of them dying—because of cancer-causing contaminants leached by Fulton Fertilizer into the common irrigation ditch.
‘Burdens’ narrows its focus on the devastation afflicting the Goldsmith family. The author’s storytelling prowess empowers the reader to become emotionally vested in Fran, Tammy, Carly, and Ryan. Each down-to-earth character is embraceable—enough to elicit tears when something goes awry.
Winn’s attentiveness to medical procedures, corporate callousness, and the lengthy legal process to mete out justice reinforce the harshness of day-to-day reality.
I highly recommend this novel which shows us how love helps to ease life’s burdens.

Although I haven't read it, I believe that Silent Spring was a novel, too. That book had so much influence that it changed history and saved predatory birds.
So perhaps a novel will strike home to those peddling death to countrysides in the name of efficiency, production and profit. I sure hope so. I guess a novel keeps the author from being sued for writing the truth.
