An Enchanting Tale

Mary R. Woldering’s well-written short story, ‘The Caretaker: A Tale of Timeless Love” is infused with beguiling southern charm wrapped in magical and mysterious spiritualism. Like the reader, Toby Jane Jenkins finds this out for herself, albeit the hard way, when she complies with the dictates of Willow Marcus’ will after she succumbs to cancer.

Not a very good listener during their time together as a loving wedded couple living in Michigan, Toby begrudgingly takes up residence in a cottage by a mansion on a hill in Markus Creek, Mississippi, accompanied by Willow’s ashes.

Henceforth, the story takes on a “timeless” drift of its own from the discovery of a family scrapbook and Toby’s task of “putting Wilow’s ashes under the big magnolia tree on my Daddy’s property before the Samhuin when the moon will be waning.”

I highly recommend this enchanting tale which embraces paranormal elements in a sophisticated and endearing manner to convey the timelessness of love. I also wouldn’t mind sampling some of Delilah Abernathy’s bread pudding with pecans and praline sauce.
