Author Mari Collier’s dystopian short story collection is a reader’s walk through unpredictability met with either satisfying conclusions, speculative outcomes, or dire consequences. Whether the story’s setting is futuristic or in the present, featuring a misplaced character from the past, the reader’s imagination comes into play.

I particularly liked “The Dollhouse,” “Plain Cake,” and “Good Sam and the Yucca Woman” for their forthrightness and heartwarming core.

Loved the ironic ending in “Control”.

Enjoyed a dose of raven-madness in “A Big Bird Told Me.”

The last story, “The New Luddites,” left a lasting impression for its feasible implications regarding artificial intelligence.

I highly recommend this collection of twisted and untwisted tales for its diversity and thought-provoking scenarios.
