Those who choose to ride author/poet Beth Hildenbrand’s Pale Horse become one with the poet whose colorful vistas afford the reader an unflinching glimpse into her fever-induced dreams bordering on nightmares.
Her autobiographical foreword steels the reader for an apocalyptic ride tempered by colors associated with shades of feelings. For instance, the color purple, associated with arrogance, mourning, and moodiness, drives each poem in that section.
Hildenbrand’s vibrant scope expands to a plethora of emotions surfacing in poems which spare not the rod for telling it like it is.
One of my favorites hails from WHITE (sterility, cold, isolation). From “A Woman’s Obligation”: Don’t look for weakness in a woman/ you won’t find it in her icy blue veins.
I highly recommend riding ‘Pale Horse’ for its profound dark, poetic exploration.
