Author Mary R. Woldering’s imaginative short read in the genre of fiction & fantasy delves into the paradox of getting anything you want for free.
At first, this appeals to Ethan Getz, a slacker who lives in the basement of his parents’ home and fritters away time which should be spent looking for a job. When he acquires a computer mouse in the guise of an Egyptian scarab, it picks up on Ethan’s materialistic desires and manifests his alter ego. The mouse provides whatever material goods Ethan wants or happens to be thinking about, at no charge.
As the basement becomes inundated with stuff, Ethan loses much more than he gains from an ethical perspective, teaching him what he should have figured out from the beginning.
