Author Robert Clark’s sugar bush vampire tale is uniquely driven by the “stakes” of narrow-minded folks influenced by myths and hell-bent on killing.

Charles Meade, the original owner of a homestead in northwest Pennsylvania purchased by the Upwode family, is a two-hundred-year-old vampire who hibernates in a crypt below the maple sugar shack on the property. Charles is a swell guy who wouldn’t harm a fly, siphoning just enough blood from the locals to stay alive, while supplementing his nutrients drinking maple syrup. He soon becomes great friends with the Upwodes.

Hereon in, the author’s conversations between his characters plausibly replace myths about vampires with genetic rationale. Assisted by Charles’ other new friends with a science background, there is a promising cure for his aberrational need to consume human blood.

The showdown between Charles and the narrow-minded Hevesy family, along with an entourage of vigilantes, is wrought with tension.

I highly recommend this sweet tale which abounds with social commentaries, sound science, well-paced plotting, and a vampire who is one helluva guy.
