Admiration for another is a good thing, it breeds inspiration for life! A fangirl is defined in K-Tastic Amino Blog as a “girl or woman who is an extremely or overly enthusiastic fan of someone or something.” It is undeniably the trend that most millennial teens, or even adults, are following. They become attached to their idols whether in music, movies, sports, and others.
The Pros of Being a Fangirl
A fangirl draws inspiration from her favorite music or film icon that helps her view life differently and influence her choices in life.
She loves what the shows, books or videos teach her. She can create a self-absorbing hobby like making scrapbooks or memoirs for the idol. She can relate to other fangirls because of their common interest and love for music, movie or drama. She has a wider friendship base with fellow fangirls locally and internationally and easily communicates with her new fangirl friends through social media and shares their sentiments.
They bond as family virtually and find relief in one another’s exchanges of ideas, stories, problems, mental issues and adventures through emails or messenger app. They can share their personal prejudices without being laughed at or bullied. Despite coming from nationalities and the language differences, fangirls can understand each other with the help of translators. The world has become just a click away or a snap away so fangirls are saved the hassle of travel and person-to-person contact.
Some fangirls who are lucky enough travel to filming or concert locations to view their idols or just have the adventure to experience the world of fantasy, gathering memorabilia and physically interact with the characters of their favorite movies. They can make money making souvenirs, posters, trinkets and other memento items for sale.
The Cons of Being a Fangirl
For a fangirl, reality bites. The fangirl is obsessed with someone who does not even communicate or give attention back. She is hooked to the object of her obsession. Fangirls spend more time uploading videos during night time so they suffer sleep deprivation, skip preparations for an exam, neglect studies and spend money on idols’ merchandise and stuff. They are disposed to overdoing things like spending more hours viewing episodes rather than going out for fresh air or leisure. They miss hanging out with friends and miss out on the good things that life has to offer.
Their lives revolve around their obsession and themselves. They tend to overlook the advantage of social involvement and more worthy pursuits and activities that can develop them or their fan group and interact with people outside of their group.
Fangirls distinguish themselves apart from others. They are indifferent and are exclusive only to their group. They have a world of their own that non-members are unwelcome. They are socially unsociable. They are misunderstood and subject to pranks. As a result, they are subjected to bullying, criticism, and ostracism from contemporaries, resulting in some fangirls having mental, emotional and anxiety issues. Some stop attending school and, alarmingly, even commit suicide. Fangirls should get out of their shell and live!
