Ride the Wave 8/22/2010 5:22:24 PM
I just finished riding one of the best waves of my life! The tide took me on some amazing drops, lifts and bumps. As it ended yesterday, I stood up with my feet hitting the sand and watched the last of what was an amazing wave mellow into a foamy end before disappearing last night.
This is figurative of course, because I live in mountainous Salt Lake City and there certainly isn't any ocean close by. But as I have always metaphorically explained to my kids, life is like body surfing and the waves are the experiences of our life. Some are great rides and others are just plain bummers! Those really great rides are hard to watch come to an end, difficult to admit they're over because it was so amazing. But if we stand there, wanting more, remorseful over the end of that fabulous ride, we'll miss out on the next great wave swelling ahead and waiting for us to jump aboard.
My daughter got married yesterday and I awoke this morning sad. It was that sense of loss that comes when the "ride" of being a mommy has ended and the mother of a newlywed begins. The wave that ended. I am so happy for her. She was beautiful as a bride and happy and glowing. Just the thing a mother of the bride wants to see on her daughter's wedding day.
So...that wave has ended for me and a new wave begins its swell ahead. I smile at the prospect that there is something amazing cresting on the surface just ahead in my future. Whether that "ride" will be amazing or not, who knows. But I do know I don't want to miss it. So, today I say "goodbye" to the amazing ride of raising my little girl, Rachel into a beautiful woman. It was an awesome wave in my life!
On to the next new life adventure...and another great ride!
