Meditation 9/21/2010 10:19:40 AM
I flew on a tiny plane this weekend coming home from Denver and the Brethrencon. The festival was exciting and everyone's adrenaline was pumping...including mine! As the plane began its decent through the mountaintops, air currents began to toss the small aircraft, batting it around as one swats at a fly. Everyone on the plane (and, yes, I could see everyone one the plane) grabbed the armrests with knuckles whitening as their grip tighted with each bounce. This adrenaline rush was something I did not want to experience in spite of my deligated "adrenaline junkie" status from ER days long ago. My neighbor gasped and I knew it was time to find stillness.
Finding center and riding the breath is a skill that is learning through hard work and practice. The benefits of learning these techniques are invaluable. As I rode my own rhythm, inhaling and exhaling steadily rocking myself into the rise and fall (much like a great ship rises and falls on the ocean currents), I found peace. The plane continued to bounce and passengers around me continued their circulation-stopping grips and gasps, but I was still.
So many people have contacted me over the past few weeks asking what to do about the anxiety felt in their lives during the past month. Insomnia, aggitation, irritation, etc. flood their entire being creating sleepless nights and consternation moment by moment. (We can thank Mercury for this...fortunately, this planet has made its way back direct so the aggitation we're all experiencing can now leave us).
My answer to the questions are simply this, ride the breath. Find your place of solitude, light some incense, play Japanese wooden flute music (my personal favorite) and be still.
It is my wish this week through October, as the moon waxes to full, for each of you find stillness, relishing the peace that accompanies you when you move into mindfullness.
