Short Time on the Bloggin' Trail 5/28/2010 2:21:56 PM
The pet catagory seems to be the most appropriate place for this blog. Hi All,
It's been a few days since I last wrote. You see it is very hot for us to be outdoors. Our temperatures have been extremely high for this time of the year.
Also there is another reason. I'm in the frame of mind where I must make a decision for the dog's life. She's been suffering with arthritis.
The other day we were walking along the tracks, not a long walk mind you. I wondered why she was not walking beside me, then I felt a tug. She had sat down putting her left hind leg out as if it was in pain. I rubbed it for her then said, "C'mom girl, you can make it. Really it's just a short walk." So, she got back up and walked for a little bit then another plunk...there she sat.
I spoke softly to her as I rubbed her joint area. We resumed our walk with me gently coaxing her and for the third time she just stopped. Those beautiful, German chocolate, brown eyes looked up at me ever so sad. "Well girl," I said, " Mom shouldn't do this, but I'll try to carry you." She willingly let me scoop her up in my arms and I walked about ten paces. She was just too heavy for me. I believe she understood this so she bravely trotted alongtrying not to show her limp.
We made it home and none too soon for either of us. I settled down with a tea and she had a drink of cold water then went to sleep in her bed. This was not a long walk, certainly not the bloggin' trail walks. She's been showing other signs of aging, like not being able to go up stairs, not being able to make it outdoors to relieve herself and this is most humiliating for her. She is spry at times, especially for food. She has always been a VERY food motivated dog.
It's been hard on us as I am one who does not want to let the family pet go until it tells me. I fear she's been telling me loud and clear. I think all that has happened in the past year aged her way too fast and it's now catching up with her. Two vets have already said she will have problems that we cannot avoid. So, her life is in my hands.
Since she was my daughter's dog,and I still consider her to be my daughters, it is a hard to let go. I know when she goes she will take many of my daughter's childhood times with her. My daughter told me the other day that she gave the dog to me and that she is ok with what I decide. Yes, she will miss the hyper active dog but she knows I will do what is best for the dog.
So, if you see me on the bloggin' trails without the dog, you will know she has gone to rest over the Rainbow Bridge. Until then...do take care andgive your family pets big hugs. They are a wonderful gift on loan...always remember that. Until the next time, see you on the bloggin' trails.
