A post I left recently concering the possibility that the Bush Administration could foster a facist regime in the short term future. godot Says:

If you wonder if the stage is set for outright fascism in America, just consider the fear and trepidation of the three social groups that could stand in its way: the press, the middle class and the youth.
The press has been as mamby pamby in its coverage of the war, and permissive of the governments illigel activity,constantly afraid of retribution and a lack of access to newsmakers, guilty of producing only wholesale timidity. No photos of returning dead, no criticism worthy of the name. Out and out complicity is fostered by conservative consipirators like Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, not to mention the plethora of 'talk show' commentators from Sean Hannity (with too many sins of ommission and commission to enumerate),Bill O'Reilly (who recently opined that a protesting female in the Capitol Gallery during Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki's speech should be sent to "Gitmo"), and Anne Coulter (who's vileness includes recently calling 9/11 widows 'rich whores' and Bill Clinton a homosexual- all the while achieving #1 Best Seller Status in pre-facist America), to name a few, daily contribute to a lowering of rational argument and civilized discourse. These hosts, networks and major papers, enjoy the revenue of advertisers, attendant higher ratings, best seller status from a culture supported and provided by elitist big business and corporate gluttony that uses them to foster more consumerism and bigger profits.
The facists love and promote this.
The middle class, too fat on thier gas guzzlers and pressed through a systimatic societal meat grinder to always appear more affluent than they are, have found fear and timidity constant twins in thier efforts to survive. Thier ranks are deminishing daily as foreclosures rise, underemployment increases, and greed overwhelms them. Never a group to 'rock the boat' it will be impossible to rail loudly enough when they become a solid minority. Having turned thier backs on the less forunate, the neediest and most vulnerable in thier midst, allowing the minimum wage to languish and falter for nearly a decade, turning a blind eye to the wholesale glutting of 'saftey nets' for the poor, they find themselves slipping ever more precariously into the grip of poverty themselves. Thier party, the Democrats, no longer capable of protecting them or promoting thier causes, they will eventually revolt en masse to even more ineffectual third parties and fringe candidates. In thier panic, they will be the one group in this triangle that will most heartily embrace facism when it arrives to rescue them.

The youth, almost always a potent, though usually fragile stalwart of protest and change, are populated in this current generation with minority numbers, lowered educational assets, institutions and cultures that breed lock-in-step thinking and a deep malaise of spirit. They are born and raised as mini-consumers in a land of materialism until they no longer consider idealism a viable conduit for expression. The majority of middle class parents have to pay such a high price for education, under the pernicious facist pay plan, that they display little or no tolerance for student protest. Little Johnny and Jane need to save THEM now, you see!
The whole capitalist culture is so permeated with false promise and glittering temptation that it has fallen in on itself and devoured its young. The student body stand dumbfounded at the stripping of liberty from thier lives. They hardly blink at the most egregous canabalizing of thier own ranks in a 'volunteer army', their demographic, dying in broad daylight by the thousands before them, maimed and disfigured in the hundreds of thousands, hardly a matter of concern. Untouched by any moral imperative, they can't fathom the passions of thier aging hippy parents of yore. To them, a new 'ring tone' for thier silly cell phone causes more excitment and commitment than any courage or protest could ever bring forth.
The facist love and promote this.
These three bulwarks against facisms' foothold, having faltered and lost thier way, will be willing participants in the mad rush that will soon come. A rush that begins at gas pumps when prices have reached unbearable highs of five, six, or seven dollars a gallon. When the cost of living, and the lack of opportunity, has squashed thier capacities to be in any way objective, when passions for survival and the remedies that a facist state have always provided,--- namely, to 'make the trains run on time',--- will be so solidly embraced by all three that a kind of love fest, which the Nazis perfected, will begin.
And of course, the facists love and promote this.
We can call them Neo-Cons, Republicans,promoters of the 'robust executive' or whatever guise they currently parade under,...they are really budding facists, simply waiting for thier time to come.
