Hats Off to Roofers 5/23/2005 7:15:39 AM
We put a new roof on our home this past weekend. I have a complete respect for those who do it for a living. It was a bite your lip, please don't rain with the sun beating down on us and threatening clouds in the distance that never quite reached us. The cloud coverage would have been a blessing. I swear I lost 5 pounds of water weight alone and have never drank so much water as I did in those 3 days.
We started taking off the shingles on my birthday, (I turned 17 with 31 years experience. It wasn't exactly what I had planned, but hey, you do what you have to. Today I feel very old. Every muscle in my body aches. It is definitely a young man's job, never mind an old lady like myself.
We had help. Thank you! Thank you! Our friends and family were troopers, we owe them more than I could ever repay ...
It was my first experience using a nail gun. The guys got a good laugh when I pulled the trigger for the first time, but once I got used to it, we were off and running. Obviously, they did the carrying and the shingling, too.(the store delivered the shingles but would not put them on the roof)The guys up there on the roof worked three times harder than I did. Forget equality, there was none. They did the bulk of the work, but at least I was up there putting in my two cents worth.
Most people know it's a hard job. I knew it, but I have to say ... I was only up there for three days. I have no idea how you do it day in and day out -- in the Florida sun and heat. Hats off to all roofers.
