What a glorious and breathtaking sight it was and even though we didn't make our chosen destination, it was still an emotional experience. Do to unforeseen circumstances, we didn't make it to the river when we had planned. We tried but our timing was slightly off for us to see the actual lift off from the ground.
However, we were almost to the river when the shuttle went into the air. We heard the distinct rumble and looked up to see it coming over the trees. A huge burst of clouds and crimson fire blasting history into the atmosphere, the roar slowly ebbing away until all we could see was a silver dot above us.
My heart beat rapidly watching the shuttle sparkle in the sunlight as I held my breath in silent prayer for the occupants welfare and safety. It's just one of those experiences that you can see over and over again and still stand with baited breath, amazed at the glory of what man has accomplished.
Our day may have been one mishap after another (I'll tell the boat story later) but that one special moment in history was enough to keep the smile on our faces.
