There was a writing prompt in a recent issue of the Creative Small Biz eZine http://digital-e.biz/ that I thought I would do for this entry.
The Prompt: Make a list of FIVE things, which scare you about writing. Why?
1. Staying Prolific- I’m scared that poof my ideas will run out. I think all writers have this fear. I think mine stems from the fact that I’ve always had a poor self-image due to the abuse I suffered as a child. Along with being prolific, is the fear that my next piece won’t be as good as the last one I had published. I really felt that anxiety when I moved from Stasis to completing Camelot’s Revenge.
2. Exposure- While I don’t fear my writing being in the public eye, I do fear ME being in the public eye. My dad is the publicity hound in the family. Because of people’s reaction to him, I learned to hate the media and did anything to avoid it. Well now I can’t avoid it, it’s all in the job description for authors!
3. Writer’s Block- Sometimes I fear that a project will never be finished because I can’t quite get my mind around it. The ideas just seem to peter out. Even though I’ve had only one project that has gone nowhere for a lengthy time with all others being completed, I can’t seem to escape this fear.
4. Word Count- I fear that I will never break 50,000 words on a manuscript. I always seem to nickel and dime my way to that number and then whosh I’m finishing at 80,000 or more before I know it.
5. Contract Woes- I always fear no matter how much I’ve checked into a publisher’s background that I’ll discover a nasty surprise once that contract has been signed and I’m committed to them. This fear stems from one bad experience and from the fact that I constantly get contacted by disgruntled authors who want to complain about the publishers I’m signed with. Just once it would be nice to get a piece of work out without all the controversy and worry!
