Gardening with the Big Equipment 3/15/2007 6:13:53 AM
My brother has talked about gardening a small plot of land. We have a tractor and he wanted to do it the easy way with all the attachments. Yesterday we went on a shopping spree at the farmers supply place. Looked over new, studied the old. Ended up with a little of both. New plow, old planter & cultivator. Dang equipment is expensive.
The plan is to plant all the vegetables we like and hopefully get enough out of the garden to can or freeze for a year. If I can do that, then I’ll easily recover my expenses. We used to do this years ago, but it was time-consuming and hard labor with a rototiller. I don’t mind the canning. That’s the fun part.
What will I have?
Corn....lot’s of corn! I’ve always frozen it either cut off in baggies or whole left in the husk. That was the simplest because it didn’t need blanched.
Tomatoes – Definitely canned. We use a lot of canned tomatoes in a year.
Green Beans – Always frozen, this year I think I’ll go with canning them. Freezers cost money to run and I’m hoping to avoid that.
Other items: Green Peppers, Chili Peppers, Cucumbers, Cabbage, Broccoli, Radishes, Pink-eyed Purple Hull Peas, Butter beans, Watermelon, Cantelope, & Zucchini.
