Let's talk about work ethic.
Let's talk about the willingness to be a team player, to become competent at your job...
To keep your word.
Why doesn’t anyone want to hire you?
Perhaps it’s because someone did once hire you. You are now working in an environment where teamwork is key. On this team, servicing the customers around the world that call with computer problems is a pretty important job.
It's so important that some people wouldn't even consider doing it. Too much pressure, they would say. Too much responsibility.
So, they give the job to you, as a contract worker. A consultant. It’s an important position in the company.
It’s your opportunity to shine.
If you do well, you could probably get hired in permanently in a pretty nice spot. Probably even move up. It’s a great opportunity for the right person.
What do you do?
You take a key piece of equipment, let's assume by accident. The person who relieved you reported it, because he needs it, but survived his shift without it.
The next day, someone from your team calls you, reminds you that the team needs it, and asks you to bring it in. You graciously say that you will. TODAY.
A day and a half later you are still a 'no-show'. Four or five of your coworkers have worked through their shifts, without it. They're starting to dislike you now.
Your coworkers are suffering.
Still you don't show.
In the back of their minds, they’re hoping that you are in a coma in the hospital, and couldn’t tell anyone around you that the equipment needed to be returned. But in their souls, they know better. And they’re all looking forward to the next time you come to work so that they can give you a piece of their mind. The boss is probably not too happy either.
They say this is not the first time you’ve screwed up—albeit not this seriously. They also say you just might be the type to complain that no one will give you a fair chance.
I'm starting to see why. You don't deserve it.
Let me give you some advice. Bring back the equipment, and submit your resignation. Go find a job where no one depends on you to do what you say you'll do.
