They say Cory Lidle’s plane crash could cost his family $1.5 million, in addition to the enormous loss of this husband and father…
What a shame.
You know I’ve always approached flying with some trepidation. I mean, I know that I sometimes must travel via air; it’s just the best way to get there. Still, I’ve always gotten butterflies in the pit of my stomach, and said a few extra prayers on take-off and landing. It’s not that I don’t believe that it’s safe. It’s more because I feel so powerless…
It’s not like you can pull over to the shoulder if you discover that the plane has engine problems…
And 9/11 didn’t help matters…
So, I couldn’t imagine doing it as a hobby. But, those who love to fly tell me that it’s in their blood. It’s not just a pastime for them—it’s something that they feel compelled to do. It’s reported that Cory loved to fly.
In any case, Cory’s family will lose a $1.5 million accidental death benefit if investigators find that he was piloting the plane. And, while I know that this is probably a trivial detail in comparison to their loss, most of us still hate to hear of cases when insurance doesn’t pay off, especially when the breadwinner of the family is gone. Cory had just completed a two-year, $6.3 million dollar contract this last season.
The good news is that the policy will pay off $450,000, and his spouse will be entitled to his baseball pension of about $200,000 per year. I hope that eases some of the pain.
And I hope that one day soon his 6 year old and widow can look up at the sky in peace, comforted by the knowing that Cory died doing what he loved to do.
