I was discussing the placement of God in our lives last night with some friends when the concept of placing Spirit in the center of our lives and our values came forth. One friend was a Native American and he explained quite eloquently how in Native American culture the ‘Great Spirit’ was the center of their existence. Everywhere from there political environment to their family structure you find Spirit, God, or the Great Peacemaker front and center.
For some reason our secular world has turned away from the God-centered belief. Even as persons with an education we find ourselves putting the material world ahead of the spiritual. Few remember their Source and live their lives according to Spirit-centered guidelines. They find themselves in a very uncomfortable place when they try to make their way in this world. They are looked upon as different or earthy and are shunned by many. They lose friends because they present a view that is contrary to the teaching of the day.
What people forget is the basic need in their lives of the Divine. There is a draw within each of us to belong and this belonging is misinterpreted as belonging to a group or sect or religious order. Instead, this draw is to the Divine – the God presence – and emanates from the deepest part of our beings. It is almost a genetic trait placed deep within us so deep that we cannot find it but can feel its presence in everything we do.
This ‘draw’ causes us to seek the Godly, to feel its presence, and to know its power every moment of our lives. Many cover up this presence and accumulate the trappings of the material age. They feel that moving ahead of another is the way to success, that manipulating others to do their bid is the mechanism to achieve personal acclaim, and that accumulation can replace that ‘feeling’ they seek.
What they don’t understand is that the spiritual imprint is the gel that gives our lives meaning. They fail to see that in centering their world upon spiritual principles creates a flow in their lives the surpasses any material gain. They do not comprehend how powerful and instructive Spirit can be in their day to day exchanges. They forget they are creatures of the Divine and as such come into this world complete and whole.
It behooves each of us to remove the mantel of the material and allow that ‘draw’ to become our life’s goal. We need to incorporate its wonder, grace, and beauty into our everyday actions and deeds. We yearn to connect with that deep and seemingly inaccessible Presence. It is our birthright and our strength, our deliverer and our provider, it is our deepest and most precious gift. This tender spot of love is the essence of our human species and gives us a spark or ignition point to light a fire that will lead us to our Creator’s arms.
