I read an article a few days ago about 'sociably shy' people. They are people who are comfortable talking with others once the conversation starts, but they wouldn't dream of being the one to initiate it.
I'm not fond of plugging myself or other people into categories, but I would have to admit a leaning toward that particular pigeonhole. You can imagine how difficult it is for sociably shy people to promote themselves.
"Hi, um, I wrote a book, and, um, maybe you'd like to buy it." Noticing the bookstore owners nails tapping on the counter I say thank you and leave.
Okay, that would be a worst-case scenario, but I know me, and when the pressures on, my tongue and brain forget how to function. If the owner had asked to see the book, I would have had to wipe the cover off before I let it out of my sweaty hands.
Here's the good news. That behavior seems to be changing. Of course, I'm fifty-six and it damn well better be changing. I talked in an earlier blog about the positive things I've gained from writing and marketing. This slightly frightening growth experience is another. I would still much rather be writing than changing my persona, but I have to admit, it feels good.
I could be an extremely well balanced person by the time I'm eighty. It could happen.
