What are my responsibilities? If I see an animal hurt or in trouble, do I have a responsibility to help? If I see a human who needs aid or assistance, is it my responsibility to assist? I'm a busy person you know, so maybe that should be someone else’s responsibility. Someone who isn't as busy or perhaps someone whose work isn't as important.
What about the environment? Is it my responsibility to do everything I can to stop the destruction of the planet? That would take an awful lot of extra effort, and time, and what can I do to make a difference anyway.
If my government does something to hurt others for selfish and senseless reasons that I find objectionable, should I drop them a note and voice my protest? Again, what difference can I make?
I recently read a book about children who grew up in Nicaragua in almost impossible situations. Our government had a large hand in supporting terrorists who butchered entire villages without a thought. Through many of the chapters, I found myself barely able to breathe, and wanting to scream, ‘but I didn’t know. It’s not my fault’. The problem is, I had a few suspicions. I just never investigated any further, because, like many, I really didn’t want to know.
Is my responsibility to myself alone? To see that my needs are met and I’m happy in this condition we call life. Maybe. It would sure make things a lot easier.
