Such a little word with such tremendous power. Freud suggested, scratch that. Freud didn’t suggest, he avowed, ego represented the outer world, but then he also gave us ‘penis envy’. Some define ego as self worth, and sometimes conceit. An ego can be strong enough to move a leader to war and keep him or her from stopping that war when the error becomes clear.
I wrestle with my ego all the time, though not as much now as in my youth. Then it bruised quite readily and took a long time to heal. Now, it seems to have developed a sense of humor, and a sense of fair play. To use what I know or have accomplished over the years for revenge or harm doesn’t happen, not even on a really bad day.
Can you say something that will hurt me? Absolutely, even if your intent wasn’t to hurt, but that’s my problem, isn’t it? What I do with your action or words has little to do with you.
I recently joined an online writing site. The feedback on my work has been great Not just the kind words that make me feel good, but all so the constructive criticism that helps me improve my writing. I’m sure my ego would not have done as well with those words twenty years ago.
Ego trip: When you get so full of yourself, you can’t see the ground you’re walking on and fall. It’s an easy thing to do if you’re not careful.
