Writing blogs has been fun, but I’ve been so busy having fun, I forgot I’m supposed to be pitching my recently released book, ‘Identity Murder’.
The book takes place in Chicago. I live in New Mexico these days, but Chicago will always be my home. Kerry Grant is a Chicago Police Detective in fraud with her partner, Mike Sullivan. They work out of the Twenty-third precinct, headquartered right around the corner from Wrigley Field. (Yes, I’m a die hard Cubs fan because ‘there’s always next year’.)
Kerry grew up on the South Side, as did I, but that’s where the similarities end. She’s a forty-three-year-old, tall, blond, computer geek who carries a badge and a gun. I’m not. Other members of the cast are Jennifer Kinkaid, a court clerk and Kerry’s best friend from child hood. They reunite after twenty-five years. Veronica Cooke is Jenny’s seventy-eight-year-old next-door neighbor who Mike and Kerry come to arrest for insurance fraud. Veronica is surprised to learn that she’s supposed to be dead.
Kerry finds herself assigned to assist an undercover FBI agent working with the mob—Marty Girard. Marty lacks Kerry’s computer skills, which is one of the reasons she joins him. The other is to find out what they are doing online. The two law enforcement people quickly realize they want to share more than email addresses. A problem arises when one of the cyber thugs catches Kerry hacking into their system.
There are a number of criminal types in the story, along with the mob. A phony insurance man, a doctor hooked on drugs, a crazed gunman that holds Jenny and a judge hostage in the courtroom, to name a few. Some of the good guys include Lieutenant Catherine Romero, Kerry’s boss; a person Kerry doesn’t always consider a good guy, and Captain O’Brian, who after the death of Kerry’s dad keeps an eye on her. Oh, and did I mention Cubby Bear. He’s a little stuffed animal in a Cubs shirt and hat that Marty gives to Kerry. He tells her he’s had the agency surgically implant a camera.
The book is about computer crime, friendship, love and the workings of the human heart, the biggest mystery of all. It’s the first in the series and I’ve completed the second, ‘Should Old Acquaintance be Dead’ and the third, ‘A Chilling Goodbye’. I love the characters more with each book. I think you will too.
