Kerry and the assault weapons ban... 10/14/2004 10:16:43 PM
In last nights debate, John Kerry again tried to blame the expiration of the assault weapons ban on President Bush. In doing so, he relayed a story that deserves a bit of analysis. Kerry said,
"And most of the law enforcement agencies in America wanted that assault weapons ban. They don't want to go into a drug bust and be facing an AK-47. I was hunting in Iowa last year with a sheriff from one of the counties there, and he pointed to a house in back of us, and said, "See the house over? We just did a drug bust a week earlier, and the guy we arrested had an AK-47 lying on the bed right beside him."
Two points…
1) I’ll give Mr. Kerry the benefit of the doubt here and assume the weapon referred to by the sheriff was indeed restricted by the ban. Kerry’s story simply illustrates that the ban had no affect on that criminal. The event took place last Summer and the ban was in effect until September 17, 2004. The point being, criminals will have whatever weapon they desire, no matter what the law says. Did the ban prevent this man from having the weapon? No, it did not.
2) Mr. Kerry blames Bush for the expiration of the ban. Perhaps Mr. Kerry should be placing the blame a little closer to home. Congress is to blame for the Ban failing to be renewed. If Kerry and Edwards were such strong leaders, why weren’t they able to get the ban through the Senate? They are the ones who are able to work on the legislation. If the ban is so important, why haven’t they reintroduced the legislation? Why didn’t their wonderful leadership skills have an affect lobbying Congress to vote on the extension. Where is the legislation for the Kerry/Edwards assault weapons ban? Mr. Kerry should either put up or shut up and as is true in most cases, the former should apply here.
In other debate activity, Mr. Kerry further proved his big government loving ways by assuring higher taxes, socialized health care, and a complete lack of trust in individuals taking care of a portion of their own social security. Like all good liberals, Mr. Kerry believes we need him to hold our hands through life. No thanks, John.
