Blogs by William J Neven Any Vegas odds on soldiers to die in Iraq? 1/28/2004 2:20:58 AMHey, the only reason I ask is because I have a friendly "wager" that it will not reach 1,000 dead troops by 2005 and we're already at 516! So what gives? I thought this thing was supposed to be in the bag! Now keep in mind last summer Vegas had Howard Dean at 50/50 for being the Democratic Presidential nominee. [Too much uncertainty there for me, you know.] Also recall that - from 1/1/1962 until 1/1/1965 - only 392 American soldiers had died in Nam [until such things as the Gulf of Tonkin came up so it eventually topped out at 58,000+. I mean - who would've thought that back in 1962. Right?] And here we are with 393 already having been killed in Iraq from 3/20/2003 to 11/10/2003! So that's what? About 50 a month maybe so you see it's kind of close if you figure 50x11=550+519=1,069. Now, on the other hand, 40x11=440+519=959 so you can see why I'm concerned. Now I know what you're thinking: Vegas normally doesn't like to take bets on wars because there's no big money in it but - like I said - this is sort of a private matter...Of course, then again, the odds that Saddam would be dead by June 30th was 3 to 2, and 2 to 1 he'd be in U.S. custody by then but keep in mind those were the odds on 12/31 - of 1969!
