Peer Critical Reviews

This is a followup to an article entitled Authors Den- members By D. Kenneth Ross and published last month!
D. Kenneth Ross wrote an excellent article about peer evaluation and review and the lack of it here on A/D!
If you haven't checked out earlier entries of my blog, please feel free to do so...
One of the issues I have concern with is that reviews and/or comments are submitted...and yet what normally happens is that the receiver of the submission "writes back" via messaging.
What this results in is a lack of interaction between the two writers and there is a total lack of community between the various involved individuals.
Now, given my business/computer background, I tend to make due with the programming and just do what I want to do with the technical structure.
So, when I just want to share my personal emotional response to somebody, I first write "comment" When I feel qualified and feel my feedback would be helpful...I either write review: or just leave it as most individuals consider everything a "review."
And, then...when I feel a need to:
I write comments back to my commenters/reviewers! I don't use messaging for this purpose, because if I want to respond in a meaningful way, I want other reviewers to also see my comments. Nothing technically has prevented me from doing this...yet there is somewhat of a tradition not to use the technology this way...
Well, I break traditions when there is a better way of doing things!
Perhaps if more people start responding directly on the page...maybe others will see the potential.
I believe it is important that we can consider others' comments good and bad, about our work...but I also believe that I, as the creator have a right to respond... and others may develop questions in response to that dialogue...now wouldn't that be...almost...yes! a conversation!!!!!
Peer evaluation can be extremely fruitful and can also be helpful to all individuals involved!
Should we be able to take critical feedback? Of course, we should...but let's be humane about it, shall we? Yes, it might be easier to be sarcastic and submit biting words about how we feel about another's work.
But if it is so easy, then why bother? The receiver is NOT going to accept your thoughts!
So, if you are really wanting to help a fellow author by provide professional, honest feedback, then take the time necessary to "find" the right words to say--in a non-judgmental way!
And, writers, if you have received helpful critical comments about something you've written, then use the comments/reviews process to respond back to the writer so that other reviewers can also see your thoughts and reactions.
Others might find that they have experience regarding the particular writing method being discussed and can add a much more insightful responsive review due to their own knowledge and/or experience ! How cool would that be?!
