THE PLANE HAS LANDED 1/18/2006 2:24:55 AM
Our hero washes up on the shores of the Big Island. I've relocated completely to Hawaii now. I even shipped over the minivan and just picked up that last week at Hilo harbor.
So we got online access last Friday, after close to a month of waiting. I notice that I haven't entered anything about my life into this blog in about two months, which is fine, since I'm sure it's all far more interesting to me than it could possibly be to anyone who stumbles across this entry.
Lately I've been noticing how part of a writer's task (any creative worker's, really) is to transcend feelings of futility or boredom -- any self-limiting emotional response to our lives or what we create from them.
At times, each of us must sit with negative emotions long enough to break through to a more creative response to life. And if you want your creative work to be acknowledged while you are alive (good luck trying once you're dead!), you must achieve a balance between acting in isolation and promoting yourself to the outer world.
Accept that we aren't all meant to be "rock stars," then promote yourself anyhow. If you are writing your truth, your work will find kindred spirits somewhere along the line.
I don't really miss my friends, here, and I'm not too inclined to make new ones anytime soon. I'm alone a lot but never lonely. That thing I mentioned about boredom is as close as it gets, and usually I just channel that into reading or creative work of my own. I'm really grateful that Doug does not like TV either. A little Wagner in the background is fine, but please, nothing that resembles people I'd want to avoid if I met them in real life. Frankly, too, I've noticed that having online access again is more distracting than it is bracing.
Anything that is not a part of clearing space for my work in the literary and musical fields is distracting to me right now. In fact, this is probably the last day this week that I'll spend this much time catching up on email.
We had our first big, driving rainstorm last night, and I barely had time, before crashing, to drag in and rip open a bunch of giant soaked boxes containing items of value I decided to drag with me to this island since I didn't have time to sell them on eBay and Amazon before we moved here. (I'd obliviously left them on the porch with little protection.) So they have been staring at me all day, and I've decided that rather than repack the stuff, I'm just going to leave it out, take pictures of it, and get it listed on eBay and Amazon by the end of the week.
We did have visitors today for the first time -- that was fun. We took them out to lunch and they introduced us to a few locals here.
