I have really gotten off my Perfectionism Thing this year. It began to spin out of control and was screwing up my life. No more trying to be more than I am. And no more worrying about others who aren't ready to help themselves.
Since early September, I'm abstinent from any mind-altering drugs, other than about one glass of wine or cocktail a month. I'm really enjoying the break and plan to continue through 2005.
I'm learning how to manage my money better. I qualified for disability this year, and that has really helped. While the low income sucks sometimes, I've cut back on expenses and become more creative about alternative ways to pay for things. I just qualified for a grant to bowlers with disabilities, can you believe that? They will give me $1,000 a year to pay for bowling expenses and occasional utility bills and so forth.
I even won third place in a bowling tournament this month and got $75 for that. And just yesterday I got a note telling me that I won my division in another tournament I entered in mid-November. I get some award for that next month, and I've been invited to represent San Francisco at the state championship finals in Covina (near San Bernardino) in May. I'm going.
A story I wrote several years ago just got accepted for a new anthology. That just fell into my lap, wasn't even looking for it. And a local newspaper editor wants me to write more stuff for them. I'm writing tons lately. If some of it finds its way into print, fine. Otherwise, it's not a big deal. It just feels good to have my creativity back.
What has amazed me most about 2004 is the discovery that some of the changes I wanted to make in my life (even some really sweeping ones) were in fact really quite rapid and easy to implement. Who knew.
