What do morality and intelligence have to do with the Religious Right? 9/13/2005 8:52:24 PM
I'm a linguist at heart, so I look at buzzwords as an indicator of where we're headed. For all practical purposes, the Religious Right is currently in charge of where this country is headed. So in the 1980s, the Religious Right co-opted morality (the "Moral Majority"), and now they're working on co-opting intelligence ("intelligent design" as Newspeak for creationism).
Strange days have tracked us down....
Speaking of which, I've begun to think that maybe the word "media" is undergoing its own subtle semantic shift, from its original root of "medium" (e.g., print journalism, radio, TV, Internet) to a meaning more in line with "mediate" (i.e., filtered experience, controlled content). But maybe that's just me.
