Tips for those seeking a writer position in television.! Is Television Calling You ?
Is it your dream to write for television, to see your name listed at the end of a shows credits with all the other people who have brought that show to life. Then maybe television writing is for you. But how do you break into this field? First off it’s best to take classes and learn the craft very well from people who have had some success in the business. Many universities and colleges offer classes in communications which can prepare you for entry into this field. A good practice is to pick a TV show that you like, study it in detail. Why do you like it? and write an episode for that show. Now when writing for TV, they are not looking for you to change the characters, situations, or plots, and write them the way you think they should be, but they are looking for someone to carry on their voice, to mimic them without losing their original theme, and yet show their own style of writing that episode. They don’t want you to change the show, but to make it better without losing their original voice, or ideas. You need to show them that you can mimic their style, keep their same feelings, but say it in an original way that is all your own. TV producers are interested in how well you write, but their main interest is how well you can mimic their voice, and style for that show . So to break into television you must study the craft and find what producers want from a writer. Take courses in communication where you can study about working in TV in detail…how to write scripts, formatting, seek opportunities where you can get up close to people who are doing what you dream of doing. Your still a writer, study the craft of writing so when that opportunity arrives and you hear the call, you will be ready personally, and professionally !
