Thoughts on Mother's Day and Moms. Today, mothers are remembered, honored and cherished with visits, gifts, food and an outpouring of love, from children small or grown.
Our mothers no longer with us often make the day bittersweet, but the joy in sharing time with those we brought into the world makes the sadness of no longer having our own mothers close seem a little less piercing.
We put aside the painful memories of long ago fights or current difficulties and concentrate on the joy holding a baby brings, the music in a child's laugh--how having someone to live for makes life truly worthwhile.
To be sure, there are relationships with mothers that don't deserve the praise. As a teacher, I deal daily with students who suffer as children shouldn't--because of a mother who simply isn't a mother to her children.
I don't gloss over those for whom this day is painful, only pray that they find peace and love from others who complete their life.
But today isn't for dwelling on deficiencies and pain--it's for celebrating the ability of mothers to bring forth and then nurture life--with love, in the hope that the world becomes a better place through the unending and selfless task that is motherhood at its most divine.
Happy Mother's Day to each mother. To my Mom, rest in peace, and know that I love you still. And Mom--Orb in a romp next Saturday!
