Littrell review of The Mysterious World

Leading amazon reviewer, Dennis Littrell, has just reviewed The Mysterious World on amazon.
In writing my latest popular science book, The Mysterious World of the Human Genome, I was determined to make this vitally important subject easily accessible to non-scientific readers. I assumed no prior knowledge of DNA, genetics, genes, chromosomes, genomes, hereditary disease, epigenetics, and so on. I even introduced an entertaining analogy of DNA as a railway track in which the rails were the support structures and the sleepers the real hereditable coding that characterises DNA. Using this analogy, I could invite my reader to take a trip with me on a magical ultramicroscopic steam train.
We could visit, for example, the BRCA genes that cause some folks to be at increased risk of breast, ovarian and prostate cancer. Or we could take a trip along the vast tracks of entire chromosomes to take a closer look at those regions we appear to have inherited from specific ancestors from very long ago, including the supposedly extinct Neanderthals.
We could also visit the master controllers, the epigenetic regions that control the expression of our genes, and show how even identical twins are becoming not quite identical even by the day they are born.
I show how the growing knowledge is likely to change the treatment of a wide array of serious diseases that have an important genetic basis as we move into the realm of personal genomics and predictive medicine.
Perhaps, most intriguing and important of all, I show how we now have the knowledge to take over our own human evolution. The human embryo has now been genetically engineered in a trial experiment for the first time. How important might this prove to be - and how important that intelligent non-scientists understand what is going on?
