A bit about my creation process. As a fiction writer, I rely heavily upon stimuli that inspires. Yes, I have superlatively creative mind, but life is busy enough these days that, I don't get much time to just sit and brainstorm like I used to.
I've been writing things my whole life, but only in the last few years have I become serious about doing it professionally. What began as a campaign to run as a dungeon master for Dungeons & Dragons, evolved into designing my own tabletop role-playing game.
It eventually evolved into writing stories based in the settings I'm designing for the game. A way to advertise for the game, showing examples of what can be accomplished in it.
As much as I'd like this to be a sly ad for my books, it is meant to be about my creation process. Not that I think it's unique, but it does fascinate me.
Despite never going to college, I've never stopped myself from learning. Trying to create a RPG, forces you to do research, especially if you're trying to make it as realistic as possible. As much as you might think it's just a mirroring of real life with fantastical elements thrown in, it's really not that simple.
You still have to come up with names, places, societies, cultures, pantheons, etc. In my case, for the campaign I was designing, I was making my own setting, complete with maps and non-player characters and a whole back history.
It was going to be awesome. That was until we moved to Iowa. It took me a long time to find enough people to play it, but, in the end, they didn't want to. I've never enjoyed playing online, at least, back then as there was no Skype or Zoom.
Sorry, I'm letting this ramble on a bit. I love context, so I try to fit in as much as I can. But, how do I create?
The only way that I can explain how I create is that, it has to be quantum physics. All I have to do is stop and think about what it is I'm trying to create. The ideas literally just come to me. As though someone else thought of it and told me.
There are some times where I force the creativity, playing with words and letters, for instance, Vason is the name of a city in one of my settings, and it's just Jason with a 'v' instead.
As I was sitting here about to write this article, I had an interesting experience.
A few days ago, I was thinking about one of my time travel series, getting really deep into trying to figure out how to explain why it's possible. I got to thinking about the Higgs-Boson particle, or God Particle, and I realized that, because of the law of parity, it needs an opposite.
As I was thinking about writing this article, my wife wanted to watch a Youtube video, which just so happened to explain that scientists have theorized that there is such a particle. A particle that will help fill in a gap, and explain things like, why the W boson has so much mass, and possibly even dark matter. Watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VUy5HvJOAE
I no longer believe in coincidence. I haven't for some time now. Not to sound egotistical, but I was shocked at my own genius. Like I said, I never went to college, but I never said I was dumb. Although, I have made a number of dumb choices in my life.
It's all led me to here, writing this article. Was it superdetermined? Was I always destined to write this? How do you create?
