(this poem is included in the first volume of my poetry collection: Pearls on a String-Love Songs)
To Father:
I stopped in the doorway, looking at you;
You seemed so frail, in your green, velvet coat.
The month was June, but you still wore
The coat that we bought you at Christmas.
You were seated at the square, oak table
Next to the window, your observation point.
In front of you was a makeshift calendar
And you scratched the days off, as they passed.
I walked into the room and sat at the table
Across from you to look at your beloved face,
Perhaps for the last time.
I was on my way out to better and greater places,
To build a future for you and myself.
You looked at me, your kind eyes magnified by the reading glasses,
"My little girl, Go!" you said.
You knew then , that we would not meet again.
Father, you were wrong!
Because you live within me
Within my heart, within my soul, within my mind!
Love and peace be with you
William
