Memories Bearing Wings

Sometimes when I am all alone
Out on the back porch swing
I’m carried back into my past
On memories bearing wings

I close my eyes and fly away
Back to someplace in time
To treasures from my lifetime
Kept safe within my mind

I see her catching lightning bugs
Filling up her jar
Then asking me to find the dipper
Hidden in the stars

As on my lap she sits
I have to act as if I know
Exactly what it is
That makes a lightning bugs butt glow

I see him on a sunny day
As at the plate he stands
His eyes are on the pitcher
His mighty bat in hand

The pitcher throws the ball
As I am watching in suspense
And then I see him send the fast ball
Out across the fence

Some of the precious memories
That I am fondest of
Came as me and their mother
Watched the product of our love

Even though they now are grown
I still can see so many things
As I am carried back in time
On memories bearing wings

Such a lovely poem of love for your children! I have three adult sons and one adult daughter, so I can tell you, I've been down empty nest street, too! Great write, Jack!

Jack thank you for sharing this wondrous, delightful
recollection of precious moments with your children.
Reminds me of when my two boys played in little league.
Thanks for the memories!

Those very same memories are in my chest of treasurezs. My daughter loved the lighning bugs until the island we lived on became HOt for Condos near the water. We saw them fade then but...here where I am now...they live like little fairies all dressed out at night fall. I wouldn't trade the awe of the child for how these moments still make me feel. I will share them with my own grand kids one day. Thanks for this most precious poem. It is one of my favorites.

Children do grow too quickly! Loved this write. This is the verse that had me smiling the most:

As on my lap she sits
I have to act as if I know
Exactly what it is
That makes a lightning bugs butt glow
