I have noticed that for some to feel snug Living in their skins dying in their sins They find it necessary to be smug Looking down on others as thus begins Their disconnect from commonality With us as though on islands all their own Living their lives devoid of empathy
Having left us for dead they live alone In shrink-wrap without solidarity With those of us outside here looking in We who find snugness alternatively Together in exclusion skin to skin
Their smugness stings their selfishness brings pain But they will pay dearly and soon someday They will never look down on us again
We face them as they squirm to look away
They fear us more than anything on earth They know their days are numbered as we rise They see their death awaken in our birth We see their smugness falter as we say Our time has come now: look us in the eyes
Steve, this poem is as haunting and wonderous as the eyes that say it all. Yes, a lot of people will have to answer for this. In one way or another, a lot of people are contributing to this tragedy. And it's not just the leaders and the manipulators in high places only, but also those who vote for them and keep these people in power…They too will have a lot to answer for. It all comes down to acting with justice and wishing for others what you wish for yourself.
This world would have been a better place for humanity if the common people of this planet joined hands, and said with one voice: enough is enough. Stop the bloody wars, the senseless feuding and the conflicts, and start serving humanity with the planet’s resources.
Steve as i contemplated this write for a second time I thought of the smugness of the people you talk of. The Presidents, Prime ministers, Kings, dictators, politicians of all rank and file, lawyers and judges, educators, media...the list goes on and on and you have hit the nail on the head, over the years we as citizens of earth have tended to settle and accept but as Bob Dylan, my favorite phrophet once sang "There's a new wind going to blow". I hope it is in my lifetime but if not perhaps in my grandchildrens. We as poets and writers plant the seeds and watch how they grow.
