..."we were nowhere / Near and knew nothing about it at all"
Totenstille
Now as I reach the age they were back when The old ones were silent and serious I know how it felt to be German then Their silence no longer mysterious
The yoke of history is hard to wear So heavy even if "we were nowhere Near and knew nothing about it at all"
Raised voices are lowered after the fall In dust and ashes lies the memory As silence becomes the witness we bear To bury the burden of history
A very deep look into the past. I almost feel like a prisoner on a train, looking out at the death camp the Nazi's will put me in. I hope that my father's trickle of German ancestors had nothing to do with it, for I'm almost too afraid to dig too far into the tree of my family to see what I'll find. This is one of those poems that 'stays with you'...
Very realistic look at a shameful time in world history, as the years pass by it seems that this subject has become too sensitive any more for people to explore in verse, but I believe as this poem does...It should never be forgotten. Thanks for the reminder Steve.
