Poetry is not supposed to be hard If it is you might be doing it wrong Poems hide in plain sight in your backyard The kettle on the stove is spouting song
And this is not to mention all those birds Sharing their feathered Promethean fire Who (if you asked them) would tell you the words Translated for the page straight from the beak To English or Chinese or what you speak Of poems they recite upon the wire

it's dreadful for me to try to write the perfect poem, or even one so close as to call it good
it simply slips away from me not always as I intend for it to but it does flow in its own way
Steven, this so reminds me of my poem The Song Of The Soul. What you have written here is so true. If you have to think the words of apoem, then you are doing it wrong. Because poetry definitely is not hard. Poetry is a song in the soul, and flows from just a single syllable sometimes.

Oh do I love this one! When you think of it, we are the poem. Our words the music we create from our everyday lives. I'm struggling to remember a quote by Rilke that pertains to this, but it fails me now.

You're so right; if you have to struggle to begin and end a new poem, take up plumbing or the violin. Such does not apply to revising, polising, and sharpening a work. After all, we do call them, "Works."
