Why do my books have four more pages In hardcover than in soft? I would ask of bookmaking sages Who soar much higher aloft Than some lowly scrivener like me Yet somehow it all turns out right I just write the poetry This mischief I make in the night
I wonder if those pages are those Stout outer ones thick for the ages? As long as the binder knows What those four pages are for I just hope somebody reads them Takes good care of them and needs them No matter how they might I need them more Because they bear my fondest fantasy

Ha! Here's what happens behind closed cavern doors when your book goes to press. See, it's all nice humans out in the publisher's front offices, but, back in the back, it's like "The Hall of the Mountain King," with dwarves scurrying everywhere among the cauldrons of fire and smoke, and there is your occasional troll, and a wizard or two trying to shrivel your book's soul. And scared little poems are shrinking and enlarging trying to fit their new home, and out the end comes the spewing of softcovers and hardcovers, no two of them with the same number of pages! And, deep in the back, a Gargoyl maniacally giggles ...
Yep. That's how it is, all right.
