Once he was really someone long ago It was amazing what he did back then He has a story but no one to know Who he used to be in the way-back-when He refuses to talk about it now Bearing his secrets to the grave below
So no one knows exactly as to how It was that destiny chose him to be A hero but he is a hero still And if he were to talk he might well say Those who were there never talk never will Old soldiers do not die they fade away
He lost his heart in the Second World War He bet it all and never won it back Still marching but only he knows what for I wonder what he thinks about Iraq
Interesting write Steve, my first book "Red Soil" was about my Dad from the time he left PEI to go to fight across Europe till the closing days of WWII. As you say he seldom spoke about the horror or pain of war and that made the telling of his story difficult to say the least. If not for war records, living relatives and friends it would have been an impossible write. Yes and I too wonder what he would have thought of todays wars.
The songs and art in this book are about our collective emergence after the pandemic and trauma of the last few years - comprised of 5 collections: World as Refuge, Where We Live, In Our Hands, Rhythms of Change and What We See & Sow.
Mary Angela Nangini's poems celebrate the richness of life and love. From the city to cottage-country and the roads in between, Nangini explores the changing seasons of her varied region. (This book will soon be reprinted in hard cover.)
