"But what are memories if not our dreams?"

Poem Artwork

At Present

The past does not exist and memory
Is reconstructive as we come to see
That what is supposed to come never does
When how it should be should be how it was
And how it could be would be just because
The past does not exist but memory
Reconstructs how it was supposedly

I see the future but choose to believe
It must not exist and my eyes deceive
My mind into thinking of what is not
Of what might have happened that I forgot
Because it simply has not happened yet

So I will just stay where I am right now
At present in the best place to forget
To remember if I remembered how
If to remember reconstructively
And if you remember I hope that you
Remember too because I know I do
Though it be only how it was for me

We can only remember how it seems
But what are memories if not our dreams?

Thought provoking with deep meaning. This has a riddle-like feel to it but with a serious angle. Well done.

Hello Stevie :)
I love your poetic expression of "The Present"
I shall also join you in this realization...

Steven,
fine reflection in this and the real question asked of what constitutes past experiences, our true memories of them, if that's possible, or what we wish they were or a mixture...

Excellent, Steven, as always. As writers, of course, we
shape our memories (dreams) to fit the present. -gene.

Great write. My problem about memory is I am not sure I remember it as it was or if I remember how I was told it was.
God Bless,
